A nonprofit board is an all-volunteer team of individuals who work together to oversee a charitable organization. Nonprofits must work to have a diverse board. Being able to have different perspectives on the table can lead to more thoughtful and efficient decisions. In addition, a diverse board will better serve communities that are not represented.
It is important to select board members who are enthusiastic about the goals of the organization and have a strong relationship with the communities they serve. Connections are always beneficial but it’s equally important to select volunteers who bring their own perspectives to the board. It’s also beneficial to ask new members what their interests and talents are, and then assign them responsibilities that align with their interests.
