The Right Tools for a Nonprofit Board

A nonprofit board is an all-volunteer team of individuals who work together to oversee a charitable organization. They are accountable for governing finances, ensuring that the organization is operating within its budget, and staying up-to-date on any applicable laws and regulations. The board is also responsible to promote and advance the organization’s goals. To do this, they must be equipped with the appropriate tools to perform their job. They must be able to easily access data-driven reports and other information in order to make better decisions for the company.

In addition to establishing policies and guiding the CEO, a board of directors is usually responsible for fundraising for their nonprofit organization. They are usually wealthy individuals with well-connected networks, and are encouraged to solicit donations from acquaintances and friends. Some nonprofits have both an executive chairman and vice-chair and vice-chair, who share the responsibility for directing meetings. Others employ a system of cooperative governance that does not have on top of the other, but leaves all decisions to the board.

Nonprofits must work to have a diverse board. Being able to have different perspectives on the table can lead to more thoughtful and efficient decisions. In addition, a diverse board will better serve communities that are not represented.

It is important to select board members who are enthusiastic about the goals of the organization and have a strong relationship with the communities they serve. Connections are always beneficial but it’s equally important to select volunteers who bring their own perspectives to the board. It’s also beneficial to ask new members what their interests and talents are, and then assign them responsibilities that align with their interests.
